Ellora's 34 UNESCO-listed rock-cut monuments carved over 600 years (600–1000 CE) represent Buddhist, Hindu and Jain traditions in extraordinary dialogue. The Kailasa Temple (Cave 16) — carved top-down from a single basalt outcrop — is the world's largest monolithic rock-cut structure, larger than the Parthenon in Athens.
Visit on any day except Tuesday; Ajanta is closed on Mondays, making Ellora the ideal Monday monument on a combined heritage trip through Aurangabad.
Ajanta is exclusively Buddhist and famous for paintings. Ellora has Buddhist, Hindu and Jain cave sculptures (no paintings) and is open on Mondays when Ajanta is closed.
Wednesday–Monday, 9:00 AM–5:30 PM (closed Tuesdays). Entry ₹40 (Indians), ₹600 (Foreigners).
