Built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II (1724–1735), Jaipur's Jantar Mantar is a UNESCO World Heritage collection of 19 monumental masonry astronomical instruments. The Samrat Yantra — the world's largest stone sundial — is accurate to 2 seconds. Each instrument was designed to measure celestial coordinates, predict eclipses, and calculate the altitudes of stars.
The observatory was built when Jai Singh noticed discrepancies in the existing astronomical tables and commissioned this extraordinary observatory to record precise celestial measurements. At noon on the summer solstice, the gnomon's shadow reaches its minimum — a moment still observed by astronomers today.
